Imran Zameer from Whalley Range in Manchester wanted to go to university to study Marketing, but the qualifications that he’d achieved at school and college were not sufficient for him to apply. Imran was working full time as a Content Executive at Laterooms.com, a hotel reservations company providing discounted accommodation throughout the UK, Europe and the rest of the world.
Imran knew that if he wanted to go to university, he would have to complete an access course, which meant that he wouldn’t be able to continue in his full time job. He had a friend who worked at The Work Company, which is part of the Manchester Growth Company (MGC). He knew that The Skills Company, another part of MGC, offered a range of access courses for people who were looking to get into higher education.
Imran had to make a decision as to whether to give up his job to pursue his ambition. He discussed it with his employers, and they were very supportive, and prepared to let him work part time while he studied on the access course. This helped to make up his mind, and Imran joined the Access to Higher Education Diploma in Business Course in 2014.
The one year course aims to improve the academic, vocational and personal skills of its students, and to prepare them for the world of higher education. Successful candidates are awarded a nationally recognised Access to HE Diploma by the awarding body Ascentis.
The Diploma is approved by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) and is accepted for entry to a wide range of universities and higher education institutions. There are no formal entry requirements for the course but candidates must have a genuine interest in business and be motivated and enthusiastic. The course is delivered in three sessions a week.
Imran completed the course successfully in the summer of 2015. Imran said:
“The course was great for me. It was totally tailored to each individual’s needs, and everyone got the amount of attention they needed. All the tutors went over and above their duties, and the facilities at Churchgate House were great.”
“I’m now going on to do the Foundation Degree in Business Management at The Skills Company. Eventually, I’d like to start my own business in on-line marketing. I’m really glad I did the course, and it’s confirmed that I made the right decision in giving up my job. I’d like to say a massive thank you to all the tutors, and especially to Irfan, he’s a true asset to the company and the course.”
