This year's Adult Learner of the Year 2016 award has been won by 31 year old Daniel Haslam, an Electrical Installation Apprentice with PH Jones, a national company with 15 regional delivery offices, including one in Manchester.

Having left school, Daniel found himself on a path where he was unable to gain employment. By his own admissions, he “started going down the wrong path” but was determined get his life back on track and do something positive.

After submitting many job applications, Daniel eventually gained employment as an Apprentice with PH Jones. As part of his off the job training, Daniel attended the Greater Manchester SkillCentre, where he developed his underpinning theory knowledge, which has now led to him qualifying for the technical certificate element of his qualification.

Speaking about Daniel, tutor Ian Lancaster commented "Danny has shown to me that he is a hard working, committed learner, who is also generous, thoughtful and determined to succeed in his chosen profession. I have no doubt, he will succeed."

On winning the award, Daniel said "I’d been looking for work, applying for 40 jobs a day. I really feel like I’ve been given a chance starting this Apprenticeship. I really enjoy my job and would love to work abroad in the future, ideally in Canada."

Continuing Daniel added "I couldn't ask for better tutors, they have all taught me skills that will last forever. I’ve had great support from John, Damien, Terry and Ian. I’m delighted to have won this award, I’ve never won anything in my life! I am really grateful to everyone at PH Jones and The Skills Company for the opportunity.”
