The government has confirmed a change in the requirements for Early Years Education Apprenticeships. At present, Early Years learners must achieve at least a grade C in their English and maths GCSE in order to pass the level three Early Years Educator (EYE) course. However, from April 2017 this will be expanded to include level 2 functional skills which will be accepted alongside other suitable level 2 qualifications including GCSEs.
The change will take force from 3rd April and will affect anyone who either already holds an EYE qualification, began studying an EYE after September 2016 or takes up an EYE Apprenticeship in the future
This decision to incorporate functional skills will enable early year’s settings to employ the practitioners that they need, and allow staff to develop and remain in the workforce.
