The first group that started the chartered manager degree apprenticeship (CMDA) are half way through their first year. The students started in February 2018 and have already studied several modules such as business environment, business law, people and performance and professional and academic skills.

The CMDA is a brand new qualification that gives students two qualifications in one – a business degree and a higher level apprenticeship.

Speaking of the students, Caroline Parker, CMDA Programme Leader, said: “You couldn’t get a wider range of industries and job roles between them! They’re all really benefitting from hearing about each other’s experiences that complement the business management theories introduced to them in class each week.”

The types of industries that the students are in a very varied, there are some from educational backgrounds, technology, hairdressing and manufacturing and engineering. The job roles are also diverse – there is a hair salon owner, a deputy director of finance, an accounts manager and a works manager.

Current CMDA students are enjoying the course and like how they can implement new workplace practices based upon what they have learnt in class.

John Edwards has said, “It’s been really interesting for me especially as the company I work for has gone through the TUPE process, so learning employment law has been really useful.”

Andrea Bailey said, “Some of the things I’m learning I’m going to be able to take back to implement new things in the company, shake things up, think about new ways of doing things. I’m really looking forward to the cap and gown at the end of it too!”
