Former apprentice Tom Britten has been shortlisted for a prestigious national business award.  Tom, who completed an apprenticeship in Social Media and Digital Marketing with the Skills Company, has been nominated for the Rising Star Award in the Guardian’s Small Business Showcase Awards.

Tom works as an Engagement Coordinator at Dreamr, a Digital Development and Design Agency in Manchester city centre.  Dreamr create immersive experiences for the web, TV, phones and watches through their app development and design and website development.

Much of Tom’s schooling took place in Spain, where his family was living, but after completing his GCSEs and A levels, Tom returned to the UK.  He was interested in IT, but didn’t really know what kind of career to pursue.  He heard about the newly developed Social Media and Digital Marketing Apprenticeship.  Tom was interested, applied and was successful.  Tom said:  “I didn’t realise that I could do an apprenticeship in something like social media, and it’s been a great choice for me.”

After completing his apprenticeship, Tom’s learning didn’t end there, he enrolled on a Foundation Degree in Business Management with the Skills Company which he is due to complete this summer, before progressing onto a top-up year to complete his Bachelor’s degree, which is delivered in partnership with Staffordshire University.

At Dreamr, Tom is responsible for the company’s own social media activity, he is involved in creating web content, blogs and e-letters, and e-marketing.  He also has a role in client liaison, and is responsible for the social media output of a number of client companies.

Mylo Kaye, director of Dreamr explained why he thinks Tom should win the Rising Star award:

“I have been working with Tom for almost two years. His dedication to my company as Engagement Coordinator has meant he has been solely responsible for getting our company’s name out there to the world.

“He is super bright and is always committed to working beyond what’s asked of him.  I passionately believe without him, my company would be very different.  I am so happy that I have the pleasure of working with him.”

Commenting on being nominated for the award. Tom said:

“I’m delighted to have been nominated for this award by Dreamr in relation to my progression on the Business Management degree with The Skills Company. The course has really helped me to develop my management skills, to the point where I have been able to manage a small team for an event.”
