The legal minimum wage for apprentices is currently £3.50 per hour, however it’ll increase in April to £3.70. We always advise to offer more per hour in order to attract the most talented and ambitious candidates to your organisation.

However, if you’re promoting the role based on experience over salary, you’ll need to make sure that you clearly advertise how you can help apprentices gain skills and qualifications in an environment that allows them to learn from experienced mentors.

The challenges

One of the challenges that you may face when trying to take on a school leaver is that young people are not actively looking for jobs through websites or other recruitment channels. One way of finding apprentices is to pitch to them, rather than waiting for them to come to you.

To do this, you could work alongside schools and community groups to ensure that your company can gain exposure through career days and job fairs. You can also get involved with running event workshops and work experience placements. From this, you’ll be able to get the attention of skilled young people in your area, as well as reach parents and teachers.

It’s important to remember that parents and tutors may favour them going to college and university to gain skills that they require in the future instead of working. So you should emphasise the unique benefits of choosing a vocational pathway, that doesn’t necessarily require a degree, and underline how getting an apprenticeship will allow them to gain more skills and valid experience than working part-time as a shop assistant.

It’s also vital to realise that a school leaver’s mind-set is significantly different from that of a graduate. Your approach to the hiring process and interviews should be tailored accordingly, making them feel comfortable, allowing them to present themselves as best as they can and reassure them that an apprenticeship can help them learn, develop and grow as a person, not just as a professional.
