According to a representative from the National College of Education, schools are still reluctant to utilise the Apprenticeship Levy. £180m has been deducted from schools’ budgets since April last year – but shockingly, only 10% of this figure has been spent. Despite the lack of standards available to schools, the Levy is still a fantastic way to upskill your existing staff in different areas.

In this guide, we’ll talk you through some of the different standards which can help to boost the skills of your school’s employees - so you can get the most out of your Levy spend.

Level 5 HR Consultant

HR management is a vital function in any organisation, and schools are no exception. Whilst you might think your HR department is running smoothly, there’s always room for improvement. We have developed a level 5 apprenticeship which contains options for HR specialisms and for people management responsibilities.

Learners who complete this standard can apply to become an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, where they will complete the level 5 CIPD diploma in human resource management. Chartered membership can be achieved through further qualifications or experience-based assessment.

Level 2/3 Business Administration

Our level 2 or 3 business admin apprenticeships are perfect for junior staff who are looking to take on more responsibility and further their career. Anyone who undertakes a business admin apprenticeship will be better equipped to manage and improve the performance of your school.

Level 3 Teaching Assistant

One of the newest programmes, the level 3 teaching assistant standard was launched in June after being developed by a number of employers – including Minsthorpe Community College, Leeds City Council and Nottingham City Council.

Although other standards for classroom positions have been available for a while, this particular programme offers learners a vocational route to QTS.

By enrolling your staff onto the level 3 standard, you can be rest assured that they will have reached full competency as a teaching assistant by the end of the training – helping you to maintain the high standards expected of your school.

The added bonus is that it can also provide a foundation for potential progression into a number of roles, including higher level teaching assistant, assistant teacher and teacher – which could lead to further savings on your recruitment costs in the long-term.

Level 2 Property and Maintenance Operative

Caretakers are at the heart of any school, and you need peace of mind that they can keep the building operating safely and functionally.

Our level 2 property and maintenance operative standard will give caretakers all the skills and knowledge they need to keep your school in the best possible condition – giving you more time to focus on other areas.

Level 2/3 Early Years Education

Another standard which can hugely benefit teaching assistants is the level 2 or 3 in early years education. The programme is perfect for any member of staff who works with pre-school or infant classes, and is designed to help them with all the knowledge they need to help young children to grow physically, emotionally and socially.

If you want to upskill your staff further, there’s scope for learners to progress onto higher level apprenticeships or even foundation degrees.

Level 3 Infrastructure Technician

A functional IT network is vital for any school – but school IT teams are often overlooked when it comes to training and development opportunities. From supporting staff with IT issues to ensuring information systems are accurately maintained, the role of a school’s IT team is varied.

The level 3 infrastructure technician standard will help you to boost your in-house IT skills, so you have peace of mind that your school’s core functions are in safe hands.
