Blu Parker was out of work and struggling to get back into employment. Following an appointment at his local Jobcentre, he was referred to the Growth Company Education & Skills so we could help him gain new skills and, ultimately, find a job.
He had previous knowledge of tiling, having worked with friends in the industry - so he decided to enrol onto the Level 2 adult tiling course. Blu passed the course, and he was keen to make use of his new skills and pursue tiling as a career. With that in mind, we helped Blu get an apprenticeship with Emanuel Whittaker Ltd in Oldham.
Andy Rhodes, Tiling Tutor at the Growth Company, was impressed with Blu’s positive, can-do attitude. Speaking of his experience teaching Blu, he said: He was an excellent learner are really engaged with the practical and knowledge elements of the course. He passed everything with flying colours and his attendance was excellent. He took advantage of the learning environment and was exposed to a lot of new things.
Nothing phased him, he really got stuck into the learning journey he was on, so he was recommended for a full apprenticeship programme. Blu had a goal when he came on the course and that was to gain employment via an apprenticeship route. He achieved this and is doing exceptionally well.”
Blu is glad that he was referred to the Growth Company, and he’s now looking forward to a bright future in tiling. He said: “I still attend the SkillCentre one day a week for my off-the-job training. I started my apprenticeship with Emanuel Whittaker in July 2019, and I am really enjoying this change of career. I’m due to finish my qualification in August 2021, and I’m looking forward to learning more as I go along.”
Well done, Blu! You’re a fantastic example of an unemployed adult coming into the SkillCentre for training and leaving with a full-time apprenticeship.
