About this opportunity

An exciting opportunity to join the Technical Team within the Institute of Infection and Global Health at the University of Liverpool. The job will involve working within both a laboratory and office environment to assist the Department.

The role will comprise of understanding and assisting the Technical Team with their role in health and safety management including:
• Management of hazardous waste
• Autoclaving of waste and sterilizing of media and consumables
• Safety training for use of tissue culture rooms and high hazard equipment such as centrifuges
• Provision of Personal Protective Equipment and washing facilities required under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health regulations (CoSHH).
• Legionella control in laboratory and domestic water systems
• Preparation of basic solutions
• Carry out basic techniques
• Undergoing training to carry out Portable Appliance Testing of electrical items
• Working alongside a senior technician on a research project

Working with Departmental Safety Co-ordinator to understand the Health and Safety management requirements for the Institute and assist in:
• Health and safety inductions
• Inspections, tours, auditing and monitoring
• Risk assessment and CoSHH assessment for laboratory work
• Risk assessment for non-laboratory work eg Display Screen Equipment
• Record keeping of training
• Record keeping for risk/CoSHH assessments
• Health and safety record keeping for audit purposes
• Support for safety meetings
• Assist in accident investigation and reporting

The two parts of this role will equip you to:
• Produce accurate, reliable data and keep accurate records of work undertaken and results
• Analyse, interpret and evaluate data and identify results requiring further investigation
• Understand and apply statistical techniques for data presentation (this is supported in college)
• Recognise problems and apply appropriate scientific methods to identify causes and achieve solutions
• Participate in continuous performance improvement
