About this opportunity

An exciting opportunity at The University of Manchester. You will be stepping into modern facilities with state-of-art equipment. Highly skilled staff will be on-hand to support you on your journey towards becoming a Building Services Technician.

Duties will include ensuring all facilities and services are maintained in an excellent operational state in accordance with current legislation and regulation.

Duties will include:

• Provide first response to faults within building infrastructure, services and equipment.
• Report maintenance issues and communicate with University personnel including external contractors to organise minor repair works and small refurbishment projects.
• Accompany, assist or supervise external contractors whilst on site.
• Report problems and/or unsafe practices to relevant supervisor, together with recommendations for improvements.
• Assist with preventive maintenance across buildings, equipment and facilities.
• Assist with the completion of maintenance logs and schedules to comply with Health and Safety legislation and company insurance.
• Assist with the update of technical files for equipment.
• Troubleshooting and maintenance for office and Audio Visual, data and telecoms equipment as required.
• Assist with designs for installation of new equipment and deliveries as required.
• Working alongside colleagues in House Services to assist with co-ordination of staff relocations between offices/buildings.
• Assist with the issuing of School office keys, security passes and access arrangements.
• Communicate with external suppliers and University in-house furniture reuse centre to facilitate replacement furniture and office equipment.
• Work to support the Head of Technical Services and a team of Technical Operations Managers in all aspects of sustainability and the development of sustainable working environments.

What you could go on to do:
It is expected that after successful completion at level 2, the apprentice will continue to study the standard ‘Facilities management supervisor’ at level 3 for a further 2 years. The fourth year will be treated as a consolidation period to practice the knowledge, skills and behaviours acquired.

Opportunities will be created to work together on cross-Faculty projects to broaden your experience and demonstrate the many opportunities that exist within our university.

What you should have to apply

5 GCSEs at Grade 4 (grade C) or above to include English and Mathematics.

• An ability to work both independently and within a team to meet time-critical goals and targets as the role dictates.
• A willingness to undertake further practical and theoretical training as dictated by the role.

Skills

Essential Skills
• Have good organisational skills; be able to demonstrate problem solving attributes and the ability to coordinate a multitude of varying tasks.
• Excellent time management skills.
• Be able to communicate effectively at all levels, and be sympathetic towards the needs of the building users.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Good IT skills including the ability to produce spreadsheets and populate data.
• Be willing to undertake any training necessary to allow proficient execution of the duties outlined above.
• An ability to work both independently and within a team to meet time-critical goals and targets as the role dictates.

Desirable Skills
• Good knowledge of Health & Safety in the work place.
