Functional Skills Maths and English

Functional Skills qualifications are intended to support learners who wish to improve their English and maths skills.

These qualifications will build your confidence and motivation, and the skills you gain will be valuable in the workplace or in any further learning.

Functional Skills Maths and English courses are FREE to individuals (including those who are employed on the day they start their programme of learning) who:

  • live in a Greater Manchester or Liverpool City Region postcode area
  • have lived in the UK for 3 years or more
  • are aged 19+
  • have not previously attained a GCSE grade A* to C or grade 4 to 9 in English and maths
  • do not hold a Functional Skills qualification above or at the level being applied for

What do the courses cover?

Functional Skills Maths Level 1 and 2

Topics covered include:

  • Use of number and the number system
  • Use of common measures, shape and space
  • Handling information and data
  • Solving mathematical problems and decision making

 

Functional Skills English Level 1 and 2

Functional English is split into the following areas:

 

  • Speaking - Listening and Communicating - this will include extended narratives and information (information may be on technical, concrete, or abstract topics), discussions, detailed explanations and presentations, all at varying lengths.
  • Reading - This should include a range of straightforward and complex texts on a range of topics and of varying lengths that instruct, describe, explain, and persuade
  • Writing – Text: this will include straightforward and complex texts such as articles, narratives, explanations and reports of varying lengths. Spelling, punctuation and grammar and writing composition 
What will I achieve?

On successful completion, you will achieve a Functional Skills qualification.

Achieving a Functional Skills Maths and/or English qualification at Level 2 will demonstrate your ability and competence in numeracy and literacy and are considered equivalent to a GCSE C/4 or above. Level 2 qualifications are accepted by some universities for entry on to a variety of degree programmes - please check the entry requirements for the university you wish to apply to.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no entry requirements for these courses. Prior to enrolment, you will complete an assessment, and the outcome of the assessment will decide which level you will be enrolled on.

 

Where will I study?

These courses are delivered online and you will be supported in the following ways:

  • Group sessions delivered remotely using zoom/Its Learning with 1-1 support and independent learning
  • Workshop/drop-in support sessions (for example, delivery to large cohorts of learners, working various shift patterns on an employer site)
  • A blended approach of 1-1 support and independent learning (delivered remotely – planned with individuals based on their working patterns, preferred remote platform, and contact preferences)
