Engineering Maintenance Technicians play a vital role in keeping machinery, plant and equipment running safely and efficiently. From manufacturing and energy to utilities and processing industries, businesses rely on skilled technicians to prevent breakdowns, fix faults and keep operations on track.

This Level 3 apprenticeship provides the technical knowledge and hands-on experience to maintain complex systems and become a key part of any engineering team.

  • Electrical and Mechanical Maintenance Technician

  • Control, Instrumentation and Automation Technician

  • Maintenance Engineering Technician

With experience, you could progress into senior engineering roles, supervisory positions or further study.

You can start this apprenticeship at any time. 

What does the course cover?

Engineering maintenance technicians work with plant equipment such as machinery, motors, pumps, control systems and electrical distribution systems. Your role will include:

  • Carrying out planned and preventative maintenance

  • Responding to breakdowns and faults

  • Diagnosing problems and carrying out repairs

  • Completing work safely and to industry standards

  • Recording maintenance activities and closing jobs correctly

  • Supporting continuous improvement within the business

You may work independently or as part of a team, interacting with engineers, managers, operations teams and external stakeholders. Safety, sustainability and compliance are at the heart of everything you do.

Choose Your Specialism

This is a core and options apprenticeship. You’ll complete the core knowledge and skills, then specialise in one of the following:

Electrical & Control and Instrumentation Technician

Focus on electrical systems and control equipment, including:

  • Single-phase and three-phase motors

  • Power supplies and electrical distribution (low and high voltage)

  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)

  • Flow meters, heat exchangers and safety control systems

Electrical & Mechanical Maintenance Technician

Focus on combined electrical and mechanical systems, including:

  • Motors and power supplies

  • Electrical distribution systems

  • Actuators, fans, pumps and valves

  • Gearboxes and pipework

What will I achieve?

On successful completion, you will achieve a Level 3 Engineering Maintenance Technician (Dual Discipline) Apprenticeship standard.

This apprenticeship is recognised by professional engineering bodies:

  • Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) – aligns with the standards for an Engineering Technician (EngTech).

  • The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) – aligns with the standards for an Engineering Technician (EngTech).

What are the entry requirements?

You must have a GCSE grade A*-C or 4-9 in GCSE maths and English.

Functional Skills is no longer a mandated requirement for apprentices aged 19 or above. However, some programmes may have minimum entry level requirements for English and maths due to the nature of the programme.

Where will I study?

You will attend the GM SkillCentre 1 day per week and a Skills Development Tutor will visit you at your workplace every 4 to 6 weeks.
