GC Stories: Muhammad Awais

30 Jul 2018
Before joining us, Muhammad was studying for his BTEC level 2 in business management at Manchester College. But when his course was complete, he couldn’t move onto the level 3 because he was over 18.

His careers adviser recommended that he did an access course in business management, and he was referred to us. Muhammad was really excited about continuing his studies and working towards his goal of gaining a degree in the subject he loved.

After completing his access to business management level 2, Muhammad moved onto a 2-year foundation degree in Business Management. He also wanted to improve his maths and English, so studied a level 2 functional skills qualification with us, too.

However, his achievements didn’t stop there – in fact, Muhammad realised his dream of gaining a full degree. He decided to progress onto a top-up degree in business management, which was delivered in partnership with GC and Staffordshire University.

Muhammad is the first student at The Growth Company to start from an access course and then progress to a full BA (hons) degree in business management. He’s worked extremely hard to make it this far, studying part time whilst holding down a job.

Speaking of his success, Muhammad said: “I’m the first in my family to gain a degree. I feel lucky and grateful to achieve a BA in business management. It was a long commitment for me - almost 5 years studying at The Growth Company. I feel proud of myself and my whole family are proud of my achievements”.

“I’d like to thank my tutors, Caroline and Irfan, for their help, guidance and support. They were always available via phone or email. The class culture was very pleasant – Caroline would offer helpful advice, and Irfan’s lectures would include examples of his own experience in business. I’m normally a shy person, but my confidence increased as I was encouraged to work as part of a team, and to deliver presentations to the class”.

Muhammad graduated last week at Staffordshire University, and he had a great time celebrating the culmination of all his hard work and determination. He has also managed to secure a job with insurance company, Direct Line Group as a Products Consultant which will help him to gain more practical experience. And, we might be seeing Muhammad in a cap and gown again in the future, as he wants to do a masters degree in business. We wish him all the best!
