Shannon Knox – From Graduate to Award-Winning Apprentice

30 Mar 2026

After completing her A Levels, Shannon Knox went on to study Counselling and Psychology at the University of Salford. While she enjoyed aspects of her degree, particularly analysing patterns of behaviour, she quickly realised that a traditional counselling career wasn’t the right fit.

Instead, Shannon developed a clear interest in fraud and intelligence, drawn to the investigative and analytical nature of the work. As she approached graduation, she began applying for graduate roles but found the market “incredibly competitive.” Determined to find a way into her chosen field, she started exploring alternative routes.

That’s when she discovered an opportunity with Protector Insurance as an Apprentice Claims Handler.

Shannon joined the business in May 2024, just before graduating, and from her very first interview made her ambitions clear. She knew she wanted to move into fraud and intelligence and was open about this with her employer from day one.

Starting in a motor claims handling role, Shannon built her foundational knowledge of the insurance industry through her Level 3 Insurance Practitioner Apprenticeship. Despite initially viewing insurance as “a bit boring” due to her mum working in the sector, her experience quickly changed that perception.

“Once you’re in it, you realise how many different avenues there are. It’s so versatile, and the skills are transferable.”

During her time on the apprenticeship, Shannon demonstrated initiative and determination. When a role became available in the fraud team, she noticed she didn’t meet all the listed criteria. Rather than holding back, she contacted the hiring manager directly to express her interest. Her proactive approach paid off, she was encouraged to apply, successfully secured the role, and transitioned into the Counter Fraud and Intelligence team in November 2025.

Reflecting on her journey, Shannon highlights how critical the apprenticeship was in building her knowledge:

“It’s all built on foundations. Without that core understanding of insurance, you wouldn’t have a clue what you’re doing. The apprenticeship gave me everything I needed to progress.”

Shannon also credits the support she received from the Growth Company throughout her apprenticeship. Her new tutor played a key role in her journey, providing clear guidance and being consistently available for support. Regular progress reviews between Shannon, her tutor, and her manager ensured she stayed aligned and continued to develop both academically and professionally.

Her hard work and commitment have not gone unnoticed. At the end of 2025, Shannon was nominated for Employee of the Year - standing out as the only apprentice shortlisted. In February 2026, she attended the awards evening and was thrilled to discover she had won.

Now working as a Counter Fraud and Intelligence Claims Technician, Shannon is continuing to develop her career, with plans to specialise further in intelligence and undertake additional professional training.

For those leaving university and considering their next steps, Shannon is a strong advocate for apprenticeships:

“Don’t see an apprenticeship as a step back – it’s a stepping stone onto the career ladder. Graduate roles are so competitive, but an apprenticeship gives you real experience, transferable skills, and a clear path to where you want to be.”
