GC Education and Skills is working with GMCA to deliver Construction and Green Skills Bootcamps to residents of Greater Manchester

10 Nov 2022

The Growth Company Education and Skills is collaborating with the Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) to launch Construction and Green Energy training courses as part of Greater Manchester’s Skills Bootcamps programme. With the aim to change people’s lives by helping them secure employment through training whilst also assisting businesses to address regional skills gaps, the programme is part of the Growth Company’s continuous commitment to support Greater Manchester on its path to net zero by 2038.

Skills Bootcamps are fully funded, flexible courses of up to 16 weeks for residents in Greater Manchester aged 19 and over. The programme aims to allow people to build up sector-specific skills and earn a guaranteed interview with a local employer on completion. The programme also helps develop a loyal and talented workforce with skills that the business needs quickly. It will help to future-proof businesses in a rapidly changing labour market and improve productivity. It is a part of the Government’s Lifetime Skills Guarantee and Plan for Jobs initiatives, designed to help people onto the career ladder, transition back into work, access better employment opportunities, and help employers meet skills needs.

“This is training which focusses on the Construction and Green Energy skills that we so greatly need if we are to achieve our target of net-zero emissions by 2038,” said Councillor Eamonn O’Brien, Greater Manchester’s lead for Education, Work, Skills, Apprenticeships and Digital. “Greater Manchester Combined Authority is striving to improve our city-region’s skill set and we are committed to creating opportunities for local people to find exciting careers in burgeoning industries. Skills Bootcamps are a highly effective way to learn skills in a range of in-demand sectors including construction and green energy. I urge more residents to take advantage of these fully-funded courses and get on the path to well-paid careers. It’s also a key to levelling up the economy and attracting inward investment.”

Through partnership and collaboration with employers, the Growth Company Skills Bootcamps will deliver a high-quality service that meets the needs of businesses, employees and customers, allowing participants to seize the opportunities and face the challenges presented by the global transition to a carbon-neutral economy. Supported by coaching and mentoring throughout the programme, they will gain both a practical and theoretical understanding of Green Technologies and receive industry-recognised qualifications.

“We are thrilled to be able to deliver this Skills Bootcamp for the people of Greater Manchester who are looking to upskill or start their career in Green Technologies,” said Roosevelt Alexander, Sector Director of the Growth Company, Education and Skills. “The Bootcamp will be delivered at our new Green Skills Academy in Trafford Park, the first of its kind in the North, purpose-designed to deliver high-quality training in emerging technologies. As winners of the Low Carbon Innovator of the Year Award at the Construction Apprenticeship Awards earlier this year, the opportunity to deliver these Bootcamps complements our commitment to training the next generation to tackle climate change.”

As part of a pan-northern effort to lead the UK’s transition to net zero, the long-awaited Green Skills Academy in Trafford Park will be ready later this year. To place Greater Manchester at the forefront of emerging technologies, the academy house the latest green technology equipment for businesses and individuals to gain knowledge and skills, including Air Source Heat Pumps, EV Charging, Solar PV and Wind Turbine training. The Green Skills Academy will be a one-stop campus to support the community of Manchester to become a carbon-zero city.
